← Back to StartI know what I want to sell. What is the first step?
A practical first step for turning a product idea into a real test, without building everything at once.
Knowing what you want to sell is a meaningful start. But the next step usually is not building a website, ordering a large batch, or designing a complete brand.
The first step is to turn your idea into a small, testable offer.
Make the first version specific
Write down:
- What exactly are you selling?
- Who is it for?
- What problem, desire, or occasion does it address?
- What will the first version cost?
- How will five real people see it and respond?
You are trying to learn whether people value the offer—not prove that the entire business is ready.
Choose the simplest way to test it
For many homegrown businesses, a small batch and direct conversations are enough to begin. WhatsApp, Instagram, a local group, or a simple catalogue may be more useful than a full store at this stage.
The right channel is the one that helps you learn quickly from real customers.
What not to solve yet
You may eventually need a website, formal packaging, registrations, systems, and paid marketing. You do not need to solve all of them before the first useful test.
Start with the smallest version that can create a real customer response.
Your action
Write your one-sentence offer and send it to five people who could genuinely be interested. Record what they ask, not only whether they say they like it.
